Anja – wool upholstery fabric

Anja is a timeless and tightly woven wool-blend upholstery fabric, featuring a woven rib-like structure that makes it a durable and versatile choice for furniture upholstery. Its subtle, lively surface adds character to furniture without an actual printed pattern.

Anja is ideal for sofas, armchairs, and other furniture where a clear surface, good durability, and timeless design are valued. The fabric was designed in 1949. Its diagonal elasticity makes upholstery work easier and allows it to be comfortably used even in more complex shapes.

Appearance and feel
Anja’s rib-like weave creates a subtle texture and structure on the surface. The expression is calm and clear, yet not flat – the fabric shifts with light and shadow, giving furniture a lively surface.

Material and properties
Upholstery fabric woven with wool yarn in a polyester warp.
Diagonal elasticity facilitates upholstery work.
Due to its historical weave structure, Anja frays at the cut edge. Overlocking the edge is recommended.

Background and design
Anja is part of a collaboration collection between Annala and The Friends of Finnish Handicraft, reintroducing designs by Lotta Ring from the 1940s–1950s into production.
Ring worked at The Friends of Finnish Handicrafts from 1948 to 1952 and designed, in addition to upholstery fabrics, rugs, rya rugs, and other textiles. Her work is rooted in strong craft tradition and material understanding, which is also reflected in Anja’s timeless and durable structure.
